Winners of Tweet Pals - Twitosphère!

Six students have won Kindles as part of the Tweet Pals contest: Twitosphère 1 (@echen94); Twitosphère 2 (@EhGwendo); Twitosphère 3 (@euqap); Tweet Pals 1 (@KuroHoshi3107); and, Tweet Pals 2 (@valerieflam)!

The winning tweets were selected because they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Quality of the language.
  • Respect of the constraints of the exercise: it is a haiku, a mini-story, or a summary / minuscule writing.
  • Choice of words.
  • Quality of the content (thorough research, interesting).

... and of course because they have a little something extra! (Notes from the jury)

A 6th Kindle was awarded as a participation prize. All the students who wrote a comment on the blog to help their fellow students write their tweets were entered into a draw. And the winner is…. @Apankumu in the Twitosphère 3 group! Congratulations to all of our winners!

List of winners chosen by Daniel Canty

Tweet Pals 1: Montreal - École Louis-Joseph-Papineau
Grade 11 – English as a second language (ESL)

First place: @KuroHoshi3107

Daniel Canty: In this self-referential sing-song, the twitterati bridges the seasonal gap through a personal reflection of his transitory birdbeing.

Second place: @tranemil

Daniel Canty: A delightful and lightful paradox, in which up and down, outward and inward motions luminously articulate landscape and feeling.

Third place: @coolstorybraaah

Daniel Canty: Ironic fallout from the Fukushima news, this pun’s nucleus is a tale of hubris, of vacations that should have been taken much earlier.

Special mentions

KuroHoshi3107 A lost kitten with his ball of wool suddenly fell from a cliff He has to take the wool to hang on a tree root Kitten's safe, ball's dead :(

DC: Edgy one-two irony delivers the punch line, pushing the kitten and his ball over a cartoonish cliff of metaphor.

Unitedspace25 It`s everything but I can`t describe It`s coming and going but I don`t understand are they something I wish I could see it more clearly

DC: The punctuation here is as mysterious as the intent yet it bolsters the overall effect of vagueness and mystical foreboding.

Tweet Pals 1: Quebec City - École de la Seigneurie
Grade 9 – Intensive English

First place: @valerieflam

1/5 The Puppy Problem is the story of Nancy Drew, an eight year-old girl who liked to resolve mysteries and who just got a puppy.
2/5 The day that the dog arrived, some muffins suddenly disappeared. The housekeeper accused the puppy of this crime.
3/5 Nancy and her friends Bess and George decided to resolve this mystery. They found the criminal's shoelace as a clue.
4/5 After an investigation and more stolen food, the girls found three suspects: Ralph Caruso, Sam McCorry and Kenny Bruder.
5/5 Who in the three suspects is the food stealer? If you want to discover it, you should read The Puppy Problem.

Daniel Canty: A suspenseful summary, even as an equation, adding up, with fractional pacing and meticulous wording, to a cliff-hanger ending.

Second place: @JeanMicheI

#tale This story is about a little potato living happily with his family in a quiet potato field.
One day, when the little potato came back from his walk, he just had time to see an old man with a huge vehicle taking all his family.
The little potato had no reasons to live without his loving family. He followed the traces of the truck and entered in the chips factory.
The potato succeeded to enter the building. He was about to save his family when a strange man came, took him and threw him on a conveyor belt
I guess that it is the kind of story that could happen for real. This is sad, but my potato chips are really good.

Daniel Canty: The all-powerful crisp-eating narrator of this fast food tale deviously invites us to ponder the industrial misery of every lone potato.

Third place: @LaurenceGag

It was on March 28th, Roxanne and I took the school bus home. We both live on the same street.
Around 16: 15, the bus driver picked us up at the school. He dropped others at their bus stop but...
He did not stop at our own bus stop. He continued to drive to Roxanne's house.
Finally, I had to walk to my house. Roxanne lives only two or three houses away from my house but for a six year-old girl, this was tragic.
I told mom : Maybe next time, he won't forget to stop for me. #memory

Daniel Canty: The scale of this childhood drama of street and school, literally unfolding a few yards away, is a snug fit for tweet-sized catharsis.

Special mentions

valerieflam Autumn is over, I don’t have too much time left, To forget the past. #Haïku

DC: Autumnal melancholy, a meditation in mirrored time, where self, past and future vanish between gently opened parentheses of erasure.

JonHarrisson In the book, they explained how the engine works. It is interesting to understand these useful machines.

DC: Is the book a useful machine, an engine of clear thought? This tweet is imagically motorized by its matter-of-factness.

CassFletcher Leaves are falling down, They wish they could dance with me, And change my dark mind. #haiku

DC: Seducing leaves into dance in the dark and stormy night of his own conscience, our brooding twitterati becomes the agent of his own fall.

Grade 11 – French Immersion

First place: @EhGwendo

Tu te souviens de quand tu m'as dit qu'on serait toujours ensemble?

BrynaCS Elle avait tellement peur!

Notes from the jury

  • Mélusine: Given the context of immersion and learning a second language, I was lenient in terms of the grammar and spelling mistakes in French, giving first priority to the quality of content, style, word choice and originality. As I was unable to select only three awards per school given there were so many interesting tweets, I chose to give special mention to other tweets that had caught my attention by their quality, originality and humour.
  • Daniel Canty: I chose to write my comments in the form of tweets.
